Week One

Our first full week of school is complete!  We are getting closer to settling into our regular everyday routines, and the kids are doing well with many of our daily activities.  Something new to the way I am teaching reading, writing and math this year is the incorporation of more center time blocks.  The students seem to work and focus best when they are broken up into smaller groups with separate activities.  For both math and literacy the students are split into three groups which rotate through three centers.

Some centers we started with this week are:
Salt Tray Writing
Fine Motor Center
Alphabet Puzzles
Alphabet/Letter Sound Identification
ZooPhonics Bingo
Pattern Block Shapes
Creating Patterns
Counting
Number Identification

I'm noticing the children like the variety of activities each day instead of repetitive activities throughout the week.  It is also much easier to get in 30-45 minutes of instruction if it is split into multiple activities and there is movement from one center to the next.

This week we also began spending time in our general education classes.  Each child is attending their grade level class for a period of time each day.  The LINKS program will be starting up very soon, and I'm hoping to pair each child with a friend to come pick them up and walk with them to their general education class.  Thank you for ALL turning in your LINKS permission slips so promptly.

If you have not yet sent in the student information sheet that went home with your child at the beginning of the year, please return it next week.

Have a great weekend!  See the kiddos on Monday :)
