Our first full week of school is complete! We are getting closer to settling into our regular everyday routines, and the kids are doing well with many of our daily activities. Something new to the way I am teaching reading, writing and math this year is the incorporation of more center time blocks. The students seem to work and focus best when they are broken up into smaller groups with separate activities. For both math and literacy the students are split into three groups which rotate through three centers.
Some centers we started with this week are:
Salt Tray Writing
Fine Motor Center
Alphabet Puzzles
Alphabet/Letter Sound Identification
ZooPhonics Bingo
Pattern Block Shapes
Creating Patterns
Counting
Number Identification
I'm noticing the children like the variety of activities each day instead of repetitive activities throughout the week. It is also much easier to get in 30-45 minutes of instruction if it is split into multiple activities and there is movement from one center to the next.
This week we also began spending time in our general education classes. Each child is attending their grade level class for a period of time each day. The LINKS program will be starting up very soon, and I'm hoping to pair each child with a friend to come pick them up and walk with them to their general education class. Thank you for ALL turning in your LINKS permission slips so promptly.
If you have not yet sent in the student information sheet that went home with your child at the beginning of the year, please return it next week.
Have a great weekend! See the kiddos on Monday :)

Welcome Back to School!
We had a GREAT first day! We spent some time adjusting to our new classroom, meeting our new friends, and taking a tour around the building. We were even able to get through a few of our regular routines too. (Pretty impressive for the first day back!) Circle Time went extremely well! There was a lot of great singing, counting, and participation. We also read a fun story called Underpants Thunderpants which got a lot of laughs out of everyone.
Take a look at some pictures from our first day back to school.
Everyone seemed to adjust very well to being back to school. I'm looking forward to seeing them all again tomorrow!

Sensory Buckets were a hit with new and returning students. |
Some of our returning students were ready to jump in and help show our new friends the classroom routines. Here we are practicing our Zoo-Phonics letters and sounds. |
Working on apple pictures. |
Of course everyone was excited for snack! |
A few of our high school helpers from last year came to visit. |
Exploring new books. |

What is a classroom blog?
Welcome to our classroom blog!
The purpose of our blog is to show you all the ways your child is learning and having fun during their day. For many of the students in our classroom it is difficult to go home and share exactly what happened during the seven hours they were away from you at school. I will be frequently updating the blog with notes, photos, and videos about what we are learning and enjoying here at school.
You can enter your email address in the box to the right labeled "Follow By Email" in order to receive an email each time the blog is updated.
As always, feel free to email me (nwilberding@lapeerschools.org) or call me (810) 667-2438 Ext. 4512 anytime.
I'm looking forward to a exciting new year!
